Hymenoplasty - Hymen Repair

Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair or hymenoplasty, is a surgical procedure to restore the hymen. The hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the entrance to the vagina. It is often seen as a symbol of virginity, but it can be disrupted for a variety of reasons, including sexual activity, physical activity, and even the use of tampons.

Some hymens are extremely elastic and do not tear during sexual intercourse. In many cultures, the hymen is considered a sign of virginity. For this reason, it becomes an important issue for a new marriage. Hymen damage can occur not only due to intercourse, but also due to reasons such as heavy sports, accidents, etc. For these reasons, some women request hymen repair. Two types of repair are usually performed. Repair that is permanent or temporary.

What is Permanent Hymenoplasty?

With this technique, a new membrane-like tissue is created by utilizing the vaginal mucosa around the hymen. In other words, permanent repair is the process of returning the hymen to its original  previous state without defloration. There are many different surgical methods used. This type of procedure is more expensive and time consuming.

What is Temporary Hymen Stitching?

This method is done very shortly before the marriage (1-7 days). It is a simpler and easier method.  After the intervention, intercourse must be had within 7 days. It is an operation that generally takes about 15-20 minutes. Hymen repair is a simple operation in which the torn edges are removed and then reattached with dissolvable stitches. It is mostly performed under sedation and local anesthesia. However, some patients prefer to be completely asleep or unconscious, that is, general anesthesia. Patients  They can go home as soon as they feel well, there is no need to stay in the hospital.

Is There a Risk of Hymen Repair?

This procedure is safe and carries very few risks and side effects. However, in rare cases, there is a slight risk of anesthesia, infection or vaginal bleeding. Complications of this operation are very rare. In a very rare case, the hymen may stick to each other and completely block the vaginal tract, or a very small opening may be left behind and sexual intercourse may become very difficult. However, these situations are very rare.

Can it be understood that the hymen has been stitched?

This situation can only be understood through medical examination.

Even physicians may sometimes have difficulty distinguishing the repair scar of the damaged hymen from the natural notch.

Can Intervention Be Made for Those with a Flexible Hymen?

There may be no bleeding in highly flexible elastic membranes. However, if bleeding is desired, bleeding can be achieved with the operation.
